Kalinowski, Marcin

Kalinowski, Marcin, b ca 1605, d 2 June 1652 near Batih, now Chetvertynivka, near Trostianets (Vinnytsia oblast). Polish magnate with considerable landholdings in Ukraine. From 1635 he was the voivode of Chernihiv, from 1646 the Polish field hetman, and from 1651 the grand crown hetman. During the Cossack-Polish War, in the Battle of Korsun in 1648, he was captured by the Cossacks, who handed him over to the Crimean Tatars. Having paid a large ransom, he returned to Poland from the Crimea in 1650. In February 1651 he attacked towns in Podilia and laid siege to Vinnytsia. After the Cossacks’ defeat at the Battle of Berestechko and the subsequent Treaty of Bila Tserkva in 1651, he took revenge on the Ukrainian populace in the Bratslav region and the Chernihiv region. At the Battle of Batih in 1652 the Polish forces led by him were completely routed, and he himself perished.
