Ostrohozke regiment

Ostrohozke regiment. An administrative territory and military formation (see Regimental system) established in 1652 in Slobidska Ukraine and originally known as Rybne regiment. It was settled by approximately 2,000 families of peasants and Cossacks from Chernihiv regiment and Nizhyn regiment, led by Colonel Ivan Dzykovsky. Its purpose was to protect Muscovy's southern frontier from Tatar raids. By 1732 the regiment consisted of 18 companies, with 3,100 elect Cossacks and 16,300 Cossack helpers. It took part in Dzykovsky's revolt of 1670, the Azov campaigns of 1695–6, the Great Northern War (1700–21), and the Seven Years' War (1756–63). In 1765 it was abolished along with the other regiments of Slobidska Ukraine and reorganized into a hussar regiment. Its territory was incorporated into the Slobidska Ukraine gubernia.
