Kalachevsky, Mykhailo

Kalachevsky, Mykhailo [Калачевський, Михайло; Kalačevs’kyj, Myxajlo], b 26 September 1851 in Popivka, Kremenchuk county, Kherson gubernia, d 1907 in Kremenchuk. Composer; by profession a lawyer. A graduate of the Leipzig Conservatory (1876), he settled in Kremenchuk and was active in its musical life, organizing concerts and music groups. His compositions include The Ukrainian Symphony (1876), based on Ukrainian folk songs and melodies; a string quartet; piano pieces; a requiem; and 19 art songs. Mykola Hordiichuk has published two monographs on him (Kyiv, 1954 and 1963).
