Markevych, Yosafat Ivan

Markevych, Yosafat Ivan [Маркевич, Йосафат Іван; Markevyč, Josafat], b 9 May 1880 in the village of Tresivka near Kańczuga, Przeworsk county, Galicia, d 31 January 1959 in Chicago, USA. Basilian monk and Catholic activist of Polish descent. He was introduced to the Basilian monastic order while attending a gymnasium in Buchach and then continued his studies at the Jesuit seminary in Innsbruck, where he was ordained in 1904 and completed a DD in 1911. He was a leading organizer of the Marian societies movement in Galicia and a regular contributor to various Catholic journals for youth, such as Postup (Lviv) and Nash pryiatel’. After the Second World War he moved to the United States of America, where he was less active owing to failing health.
