Mountain Brigade of the Ukrainian Galician Army

Mountain Brigade of the Ukrainian Galician Army (Persha hirska brygada UHA). Formed out of the Staryi Sambir and Liutovyska groups in January 1919 by Maj V. Chersky, the brigade established its headquarters in Turka and became part of the Third Corps. During the Polish offensive in May 1919, it was cut off from other Ukrainian Galician Army units and retreated across the border into Czechoslovakia. The Czechs disarmed it and sent it to Deutsch-Gabel for internment. The Galician government failed to win its release. The brigade remained in prisoner of war camps until 1926, when it was dissolved. Its commanders in the camps were Lt Col V. Fedorovych, Col Antin Varyvoda, Brig Gen Viktor Kurmanovych, and Brig Gen Arnold Wolf.
