Omelchenko, Tymish

Omelchenko, Tymish [Омельченко, Тиміш; Omel’čenko, Tymiš], b 21 February 1893 in Verbky, Khorol county, Poltava gubernia, d 6 September 1955 in Toronto. Military and civic leader, journalist. In 1914 he was sent to the front from the Kyiv military school and was captured by the Germans. He helped organize the Bluecoats in 1918 and served in various posts in the Army of the Ukrainian National Republic, in which he eventually attained the rank of lieutenant colonel. After the First World War he emigrated to Germany, where for many years he headed the Ukrainian National Alliance (1937–45) and published its Ukraïns’kyi visnyk (Berlin). In 1950 he resettled in Canada.
