Yavorivsky, Yevhen

Yavorivsky, Yevhen [Яворівський, Євген; Javorivs'kyj, Jevhen], b 19 September 1893 in Kolomyia, Galicia, d 11 November 1954 in Detroit, Michigan. Journalist and civic activist. He completed philological studies at Vienna University in 1914. After the First World War he taught at gymnasiums in Chortkiv and Yavoriv (1922–30). After being dismissed from his teaching position for political reasons he worked in Lviv for the newspaper Novyi chas and for Samoosvita publishers. He was a member of the chief executive of the Ukrainian Socialist Radical party and was active in its youth organization, Kameniari. After emigrating to the United States in 1950, he joined the editorial board of Vil’na Ukraïna (United States) and a number of Ukrainian civic and cultural organizations. In addition to journalistic articles he wrote a book on Greek mythology, the collection of short stories Sered kul' i granat (Amid Bullets and Grenades, 1922), the tragedy Zradnyk (Traitor, 1923), and the novel Zaky more perelechu (By the Time I Fly across the Sea, 1938).
