Zinkiv (Poltava oblast)

Zinkiv (Poltava oblast) [Zin’kiv]. Map: III-15. A town (2001 pop 10,577) on the Tashan River and a raion center in Poltava oblast. It was first mentioned in a historical document in 1604. After Bohdan Khmelnytsky's uprising and the Cossack-Polish War Zinkiv was fortified, and became a company center in Poltava regiment and then Hadiach regiment. For a while it was a regiment center (1660–71) before returning to the status of a company town of Poltava regiment (1671–1764). In the mid-18th century Elizabeth I granted the town to Hetman Kyrylo Rozumovsky. Maksym Zalizniak's haidamakas were active in the area in 1768 (see Haidamaka uprisings). In the 19th century Zinkiv was a county center in Poltava gubernia and a flourishing manufacturing and trading town. Today the town has a food industry, a brick factory, and a workshop of the Poltavchanka handicrafts consortium.
