Vashchenko, Vasyl S.

Vashchenko, Vasyl S. [Ващенко, Василь; Vaščenko, Vasyl'], b 11 March 1905 in Nizhyn, Chernihiv gubernia, d 12 November 1993 in Dnipropetrovsk. Linguist. A graduate of the Dnipropetrovsk Institute of People's Education (1930), from 1933 he lectured at Dnipropetrovsk University, eventually chairing the department of Ukrainian language. He wrote numerous works, including a Ukrainian grammar (1938); textbooks on Ukrainian stylistics (1958), the Ukrainian language (1959, 1961), and Ukrainian stylistic morphology (1970); monographs on the Poltava dialects (doctoral diss, 1957), the dialectal lexicon of the middle and lower Dnipro region (1962), Taras Shevchenko’s language (1963), the linguistic geography of the Dnipro River region (1968), and the stylistics of the Ukrainian sentence (1968); and a dictionary of the Poltava dialects (1960); and prepared a scheme for a dictionary of Ukrainian synonyms (1969). He also edited the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR dictionary of Shevchenko’s language (2 vols, 1964) and books on the folk and contemporary dialects of the Dnipro region (1969).
