Gorlice (Ukrainian: Horlytsi [Horlyci]). Low Beskyd foothills. Until 1946 the southern part of Gorlice county was within Ukrainian ethnic territory (the western part of the Lemko region). In 1939, 27,000 of the county's 29,000 inhabitants were Ukrainian. In 1945–6 most of them were forcibly resettled in the western oblasts of Soviet Ukraine or in the western regions of Poland newly acquired from Germany (see Operation Wisła).
