Hrytsak, Yevhen [Грицак, Євген; Hrycak, Jevhen; Evhen], b 5 January 1890 in Peratyn, Radekhiv county, Galicia, d 23 October 1944 in Czechoslovakia. Pedagogue and linguist. A graduate of Cracow University (PH D 1913), he taught at a gymnasium in Kyiv from 1917 and worked as an associate of the Terminological Commission of the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences. He returned to Galicia in 1923 and taught in Peremyshl and (from 1940) Jarosław. While fleeing to the West in 1944 he was killed at the Orem-Laz refugee camp in Slovakia by Soviet partisans.

Hrytsak’s publications include studies of Ukrainian word formation, onomastics, and literature, dictionaries, and grammar textbooks. His chief works are: Z istoriï ukraïns'koho knyzhkovoho rukhu na Velykii Ukraïni, 1917–1922 (On the History of the Ukrainian Book Movement in Great Ukraine, 1917–22, 1923), Pid chervonoiu vladoiu: Shkil'na sprava na radians'kii Ukraïni (Under the Red Regime: Schooling in Soviet Ukraine, 1923), and a Ukrainian-Polish and Polish-Ukrainian dictionary compiled with Kost Kysilevsky (1931).
