Khartsyzk [Харцизьк; Xartyz’k]. Map: DBIII-4. City (2014 pop 58,641) under oblast jurisdiction in Donetsk oblast. Established as a railroad station and coal-mining settlement in 1869, it has grown substantially since the Second World War. In 1897 its population was 674; in 1912, 1,500; in 1923, 3,000; in 1931, 8,300; in 1963, 38,000. From 1923 to 1962 it was a raion center. Its several plants produce large-diameter steel pipes, steel wire and cables, machinery, armatures, metal products, and food concentrates.
