Kobyliansky, Volodymyr [Кобилянський, Володимир; Kobyljans'kyj], b 27 August 1895 in Iaşi, Moldavia, d 10 September 1919 in Kyiv. Symbolist poet, translator, and critic. His first poems appeared in 1913 in the Chernivtsi paper Nova Bukovyna while he was a village teacher in Bukovyna. From 1913 he lived in Kyiv and contributed to journals there. He translated into Ukrainian much of Heinrich Heine’s Buch der Lieder and individual works by Johann Christoph Friedrich Schiller. In the last months of his life he belonged to the writers’ group Muzahet. Collections of his works, Mii dar (My Gift, 1920) and Tvory (Works, 1930), were published after his death from typhus.
