Kostetsky, Volodymyr [Костецький, Володимир; Kostec’kyj], b 10 September 1905 in Kholmy, Sosnytsia county, Chernihiv gubernia, d 26 May 1968 in Kyiv. Realist painter. A graduate of the Kyiv State Art Institute (1928) and a student of Fedir Krychevsky, he depicted the life of Donbas miners in his earliest works. In the 1930s he converted to socialist realism and in this style produced such propagandistic works as Interrogation of the Enemy (1937), The Return (1947), The Scouts (1950), and Presentation of the Party Card (1959). From 1937 he lectured at the Kyiv State Art Institute. H. Portnov published a monograph on Kostetsky in 1958.
