Liulka, Arkhyp [Люлька, Архип; Ljul'ka, Arxyp], b 23 March 1908 in Savarka, Kaniv county, Kyiv gubernia, d 1 April 1984 in Moscow. Airplane engine designer; full member of the USSR Academy of Sciences from 1968. He graduated from the Kyiv Polytechnical Institute (1931), worked in Kharkiv, Leningrad, and Moscow, and taught at the Kharkiv Aviation Institute. He headed the Aircraft Design Bureau of the State Committee for Aviation Engineering at the USSR Council of Ministers and from 1965 worked in the USSR Ministry of the Aircraft Industry. He designed the first Soviet turbo-compressor jet engine (1937–9) and other turbo jet engines, such as the AL-3 and AL-5, and worked on new fuels.
