Lysiansky, Yurii [Лисянський, Юрій; Lysjans’kyj, Jurij], b 13 August 1773 in Nizhyn, d 6 March 1837 in Saint Petersburg. Explorer and captain in the Russian navy. He completed naval training in the Kronstadt Naval Academy in 1786. In 1788–90 he took part in battles in the Baltic Sea. With the Estonian A. Krusenstern Lysiansky organized the first Russian expedition around the world on the Neva and Nadezhda (1830–6). Lysiansky commanded the Neva, which followed the route Kronstadt–Cape Horn–Hawaii–Alaska–Canton–Cape of Good Hope–Kronstadt. His numerous oceanographic and ethnographic findings and the navigational charts made by him were published in 1812 as Puteshestvie vokrug sveta na korable ‘Neva’ v 1803–1806 godakh and appeared in English in 1814 as Voyage round the World on the Ship ‘Neva’ in 1803–1806. An island on the shores of the Sea of Okhotsk and a mountain on the island of Sakhalin have been named after Lysiansky.
