Maksymovych, Ivan P. [Максимович, Іван; Maksymovyč], b ?, d 1732. Cossack official. After studying at the Kyivan Mohyla Academy he became active in Hetman Ivan Mazepa’s administration. He fled from Ukraine with Hetman Mazepa after the Battle of Poltava, and then became general chancellor under Hetman Pylyp Orlyk and was instrumental in concluding alliances with the Crimean Tatars and the Ottoman Porte. After returning to Ukraine in 1715, he was exiled to Moscow, where he worked as a clerk and was responsible for cataloging and putting in order the library of the synodal printing house. In 1722–6 he prepared a Latin-Slavonic dictionary based on G. Knapski’s Latin-Polish dictionary (1626), but it remained unpublished. He was dismissed in 1728 for political disloyalty.
