Malaniuk, Ira [Маланюк, Іра; Malanjuk], b 19 January 1919 in Stanyslaviv, Galicia, d 25 February 2009 in Zirl, Austria. Opera and concert singer (mezzo-soprano). She studied under A. Didur in Lviv and at the Vienna Music Academy. In 1941–4 she appeared at the Lviv Opera Theater, and in 1947 at the Municipal Opera in Zurich. From 1952 she was a soloist of the Munich State Opera, and she also sang at the Vienna State Opera, La Scala, the Paris Opera, and Covent Garden, and in Berlin and Stuttgart. She was highly regarded in operas by Richard Strauss and was well known at the Salzburg Festivals. In recitals she sang from the Ukrainian repertoire, including art songs by Mykola Lysenko, Denys Sichynsky, Stanyslav Liudkevych, Vasyl Barvinsky, Yakiv Stepovy, Nestor Nyzhankivsky, Borys Liatoshynsky, and Andrii Hnatyshyn. She recorded for many international labels.
