Manastyrsky, Oleksander [Манастирський, Олександер; Manastyrs'kyj], b 22 June 1857 in Luzhany, Bukovyna, d 23 October 1920 in Chernivtsi. Bukovynian Ukrainian Orthodox church and community activist and ethnographer. As an adviser to the consistory (from 1898) and then archimandrite and vicar to the metropolitan, he fought for Ukrainian rights in the Bukovynian Orthodox metropoly. He wrote a religious textbook for elementary schools and the article ‘Die Ruthenen’ in the collection Die Österreichisch-Ungarische Monarchie in Wort und Bild—Bukowina (1899), and coauthored Die Ruthenen in der Bukowina (with Raimund Friedrich Kaindl, 2 vols, 1889–90). Manastyrsky’s ethnographic works include articles, written in Ukrainian and German, on New Year and Easter traditions.
