Manning, Clarence Augustus, b 1 April 1893 in New York, d 4 October 1972 in Pleasantville, New York State, USA. American Slavist; member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society. He graduated from Columbia University (PH D, 1915) and taught there from 1917 to 1958. He became a professor in 1924 and chairman of the Slavic department in 1940. In 1948 he received an honorary PH D from the Ukrainian Free University. An early promoter of Ukrainian studies and the Ukrainian national cause in American academic circles, he wrote Ivan Franko (1938), Ukrainian Literature: Studies of the Leading Authors (1944), Taras Shevchenko, Poet of Ukraine: Selected Poems (1945, intro and trans), The Story of Ukraine (1947), Outline of Ukrainian History (1949), Twentieth-Century Ukraine (1951), Ukraine under the Soviets (1953), Hetman of Ukraine, Ivan Mazeppa (1957), and many articles in the Ukrainian Quarterly. He was one of the initiators of the project to publish Ukraine: A Concise Encyclopaedia and edited collections of Ivan Franko’s selected poems (Ivan Franko, the Poet of Western Ukraine, 1948) and Lesia Ukrainka’s works (Spirit of Flame, 1950) translated by P. Cundy.
