Mashchenko, Mykola [Мащенко, Микола; Maščenko], b 12 January 1929 in Miluvatka, now in Svatove raion, Luhansk oblast, d 2 May 2013 in Kyiv. Film director. In 1953 he completed study at the Kharkiv Theater Institute, and from 1957 he worked in the Kyiv Artistic Film Studio (from 1988 to 2004 as director), where he directed several films and television films on moral and social problems, including Shliakh na Sofiiu (Road to Sofia, 1978) and Ovid (The Gadfly, 1980, based on Ethel Lillian Voynich's novel), Paryz’ka drama (A Paris Drama, 1983), Zona (The Zone; 1988), and a historical film Bohdan-Zynovii Khmelnytskyi (2008). He was awarded the Shevchenko Prize in 1982. Mashchenko also taught at the Kyiv Institute of Theater Arts.
