National Medical University (Національний медичний університет ім. О. Богомольця; Natsionalnyi medychnyi universytet im. O. Bohomoltsia). An institution of higher learning in Kyiv. It was founded in 1841 as the Medical Faculty of Kyiv University, which was merged with the Kyiv Woman’s Medical Institute (from 1907 to 1916 the Medical Faculty of the Kyiv Higher Courses for Women) to form the Kyiv Medical Academy. I was renamed as Kyiv Medical Institute in 1921. In 1992 the institute was reorganized into the Kyiv State Meducal University. In 1995 it was granted the national university status and assumed its present name. The university has four medical faculties as well as faculties of stomatology, pharmacology, medical psychology, training physicians for the Ukrainian Armed Forces, and a foreign students faculty. The enrolment is over 12,000 students. The university’s library holds over 650,000 volumes. The National Museum of Medicine is run by the university. The university publishes several scientific medical journals, including Ukraïs'kyi nevrolohichnyi zhurnal (Ukrainian Neurological Journal) and others. Many prominent medical specialists have taught at the university (see Medical education).
