Nimchuk, Ivan [Німчук, Іван; Nimčuk], b 12 February 1891 in Dzhuryn, Chortkiv county, Galicia, d 1 May 1956 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Civic and political leader and journalist; member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society from 1948. While studying at Lviv University he helped edit the daily Nove slovo (1912–14). After recovering from wounds sustained on the Serbian front of the First World War he moved to Vienna, where he edited Vidrodzhennia Ukraïny (1918) and Ukraïns’kyi prapor (1921–3) and completed his studies in history (PH D, 1924). In 1925 he joined the editorial board of Dilo, and in 1935 he became managing and technical editor of the paper. He also served as a member of the Central Committee of the Ukrainian National Democratic Alliance. After being held by the Soviets in the Lubianka prison in Moscow (1939–41) he returned to Lviv, where he worked as a correspondent and editor of Krakivs’ki visti (1942–4) and chief editor of Nashi dni. After leaving Ukraine he was chief editor of the weekly Khrystyians’kyi shliakh (1946–7) in Germany and Ukraïns’ki visti/Ukrainian News (1949–56) in Edmonton. During his career he edited many books and almanacs. His special interests were military history, the growth of populism, and the history of the Ukrainian press, and he wrote many articles on these subjects. His writings include 595 dniv soviets'kym v’iaznem (595 Days as a Soviet Prisoner, 1950).
