Novhorod-Siverskyi archeological site. An Upper Paleolithic rock shelter located on the banks of the Desna River in Novhorod-Siverskyi, Chernihiv oblast. Discovered in 1933 and excavated in 1935–8 and 1954, the site revealed a typical Upper Paleolithic flint tool assemblage. Three unusually large (33.9, 44, and 45.4 cm) pieces are believed to have been used to cut animal bones. Also recovered were a large mammoth rib (59.5 cm) decorated with linear inscriptions, skull fragments, and animal bones.
