Petro Mohyla Black Sea National University [Чорноморський національний університет імені Петра Могили; Chornomors'kyi natsional'nyi universytet imeni Petra Mohyly]. A national institution of higher learning located in Mykolaiv. It was founded in 1996 as a regional branch of the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (NaUKMA), along with another branch in Ostroh (see National University of Ostroh Academy). From 2002 until 2008 the Mykolaiv branch functioned as Mykolaiv State College (later University) of the Humanities within the Educational and Research Complex ‘Kyiv-Mohyla Academy.’ In 2008 it became an independent institution named in honor of Metropolitan Petro Mohyla as Petro Mohyla Black Sea State University. In 2016 it was granted the national university status and assumed its current name. The Petro Mohyla Black Sea National University is widely considered to be one of the best institutions of higher learning with liberal arts curriculum in southern Ukraine. In 2019 it was ranked 62 in the Consolidated Ranking of 240 Ukrainian colleges and universities conducted by the influential educational web portal Osvita.ua. The same year it was also ranked 42 out of 224 of Ukraine’s colleges and universities according to GPA of the applicants enrolled in the government-financed programs and based on the External Independent Evaluation (ZNO) of secondary school graduates.

The university includes four institutes (public administration; philology; medicine; and postgraduate education) and five faculties (economic sciences; computer sciences; political sciences; law; and physical education and sport). In addition, there are several research, learning and student-development centers, among them Mykolaiv Center for Sociological Research, the Center for Innovative Technologies, the Center for the English-Language Information in the Humanities (co-founded by the US Peace Corps in Ukraine), the Center for European and Global Integration, and the Center for Social and Psychological Support of Students. The university library contains over 110,000 publications, primarily in Ukrainian, Russian, and English. The university’s art gallery was established in 1998 and has since become a leading art venue in the city of Mykolaiv. The Cultural and Arts Center coordinates diverse recreational activities of students, including the student theater and a series of music festivals.

The main academic periodical published by the university is Naukovi pratsi (since 1996) that appears in several series, including public administration; economics; history; computer technologies; pedagogy; political science; philology; and philosophy. One periodical, Public Policy and Economic Development, has been published in English (since 2014) in partnership with the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, Poland.
