Sardines (Sardina, Sardinella, Sardinops; Ukrainian: sardyny). The common name for fish of the family Clupeidae and other small (to 30 cm long) herringlike fish. Sardines are eaten fresh, salted, smoked, or canned in oil or tomato or mustard sauce; some are used as animal feed or for oil production. In Ukraine the Atlantic sardine (Sardina pilchardus) and Sardinella aurita are found in the Black Sea. (See also Fishing industry.)
