Shumliansky, Pavlo [Шумлянський, Павло; Šumljans'kyj], b 1752 in Mali Budyshcha, near Poltava, d 1821 in Kharkiv. Physician; brother of Oleksander Shumliansky. He was educated at the Kyivan Mohyla Academy (1763–70), the Saint Petersburg Medical School (1773–4), and Strasbourg University (1784–9), where he wrote a doctoral dissertation on local inflammation. He lectured at the Saint Petersburg Medical School and in 1795 became a professor of surgery and pharmacology at the Moscow Medical School. In 1805–17 he served as a professor of surgery at and the dean of the medical faculty of Kharkiv University. His publications deal with the medicinal properties of water, mineral waters in Poltava gubernia, and bone dislocations. He contributed to the reorganization of medical education in the Russian Empire.
