Stetkevych, Osyp [Стеткевич, Осип; Stetkevyč; or Stetkewicz, Joseph], b 12 January 1876 in Plotycha Velyka, Berezhany county, Galicia, d 23 January 1942 in New York. Teacher, journalist, and civic figure. He completed study at a teachers' seminary and taught for several years until forced to emigrate to the United States in 1904 because of persecution by the Polish Galician authorities. He was active in Ukrainian educational work in the United States (he urged the development of nationwide structures and standard texts) and worked for an extended period with the newspaper Svoboda as an editor (1910 and 1912–19) and associate. He was also a cofounder of the American Ruthenian National Council.
