Sverdlovsk [Свердловськ; Sverdlovs'k]. Map: V-20, DB Map: DBIII-7. A city (2013 pop 65,276) and raion center in Luhansk oblast. It originated as the settlement Dovzhykove-Orlovskе at the end of the 18th century and was renamed Sharapkyne later. The first coal mines were developed in the area in the 1870s. In 1938 several mining settlements were amalgamated to form the city of Sverdlovsk. Today the city is an industrial center with 12 mines, 4 coal enrichment plants, a machine-building and metalworking industry, mining-equipment repair shops, and a clothes-sewing complex. It has a regional studies museum.
