Turgenev, Ivan [Тургенев, Иван], b 9 November 1818 in Orel, Russia, d 3 November 1883 in Bougival, France. Russian writer. He is the author of a number of novels that have become part of the Russian literary canon; all of them have been translated into Ukrainian. In the 1860s he became interested in Ukrainian literature and befriended Taras Shevchenko (he wrote his memoirs of Shevchenko in 1876). He maintained a close friendship with Marko Vovchok and published Russian translations of her folktales (1859). Turgenev's works have been translated into Ukrainian by Ivan Franko, Lesia Ukrainka, Maksym Rylsky, and others. The many Ukrainian translations include Poeziï v prozi (Poetry in Prose, 1903), Vybrani tvory (Selected Works, 1937), Opovidannia i povisti (Stories and Novellas, 1949), Dvorians’ke hnizdo (A Nest of Gentlefolk, 1952), Naperedodni (On the Eve, 1954), and Rudin (1956).
