Verkhovyna region [Верховина; Verxovyna]. A common designation for the highland region of the Middle-Carpathian Depression in the upper reaches of the Stryi River, the Opir River, the Liatorytsia River, and the Velyka Rika River basins in the Carpathian Mountains. The Verkhovyna area is inhabited by the Boikos, although local people also refer to themselves as verkhovyntsi, or Highlanders. A number of popular Ukrainian folk songs praise the Verkhovyna region and its natural beauty.
