Volynets, Ananii [Волинець, Ананій; Volynec', Ananij], b 1 October 1894 in Karbivka, Haisyn county, Podilia gubernia, d 14 May 1941 in Vinnytsia. An activist of the Ukrainian partisan movement in Ukraine, 1918–22, and officer of the Army of the Ukrainian National Republic. An agronomist by profession, during Ukraine’s struggle for independence (1917–20) he commanded troops in Haisyn county, Podilia gubernia, and was an organizer of the Free Cossacks. He published the newspaper Povstanets’ and participated in the 1919 uprising which overthrew the Hetman government and in the anti-Bolshevik partisan movement. Subsequently he served as an officer of the UNR Army. After the revolution he lived in western Volhynia and was active in the Volhynian Ukrainian Alliance. Following the Soviet occupation of Western Ukraine in 1939 (as a result of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact), Volynets was arrested by the NKVD and executed.
