Voynich, Ethel Lillian (née Bull), b 11 May 1864 in Cork, Ireland, d 28 July 1960 in New York, United States. English writer, and author of articles on Eastern Slavic folklore and Slavic music. She corresponded with Mykhailo Pavlyk. Her first published writings were translations from Russian writers. She then learned Ukrainian and began translating Ukrainian folk songs (‘Oi hore tii chaitsi’ [O Woe to the Seagull] and others). In 1911 she published a collection of translations (of six poems) of Taras Shevchenko and his biography, Six Lyrics from the Ruthenian of T. Shevchenko. Her novel The Gadfly was published twice in Ukrainian translation (Ovid, 1929 and 1985), and a translation of her novel Jack Raymond was published in 1930.
