Yahotyn [Яготин; Jahotyn]. See Google Map. EU Map: III-12. A city (2020 pop 19,409) on the Supii River and a raion center in Kyiv oblast. It was founded in 1552 by Cossacks and peasants fleeing Polish oppression. At the beginning of the 17th century it came under Polish rule and became part of Pereiaslav county in Kyiv voivodeship. In 1648 the town became a company center in Pereiaslav regiment. A century later Empress Elizabeth I granted the town to Hetman Kyrylo Rozumovsky. In 1820 it passed through marriage to Prince Nikolai Repnin, whom Taras Shevchenko visited there several times in the 1840s. In the 19th century the town belonged to Pyriatyn county in Poltava gubernia. Today the city is an agricultural center with several food-processing enterprises, including the Tsukor Research and Refining Consortium, and a building-materials industry. It has a historical museum and an art gallery.
