Lyman, Leonid, b 13 August 1922 in Mali Sorochyntsi, now in Myrhorod raion, Poltava oblast, 31 October 2003 in New York. (Photo: Leonid Lyman.) Poet and writer. He began to publish lyric poetry when he was still a student at the Kharkiv Pedagogical Institute. A postwar refugee, in 1949 he settled in New York and resumed writing. His poetry appeared in various journals and collections. Excerpts from his novels ‘Kolhospnyky’ (Collective Farmers) and ‘Povist' pro Kharkiv’ (A Tale about Kharkiv) have been published in several periodicals. In 1961 he begun editing the cultural and political news digest Notatnyk. Although no collections of his poetry have been published so far, some literary critics consider Lyman to be one of the best Ukrainian poets of his generation.
