Karpov, Gennadii [Карпов, Геннадій], b 14 February 1839 in Uglich, Yaroslavl gubernia, Russia, d 6 May 1890 in Moscow. Russian historian. He studied with Sergeiovev at Moscow University. In 1870–1 he was a professor at Kharkiv University and then lived in Moscow. He is the author of works on 17th-century Ukraine, among them Kriticheskii obzor razrabotki glavnykh russkikh istochnikov do istorii Malorossii otnosiashchikhsia za vremia 1654–1672 gg. (A Critical Survey of the Treatment of Major Russian Sources on the History of Little Russia in the Years 1651–1672, 1870), a monograph on Mykola Kostomarov entitled Kostomarov kak istorik Malorossii (Kostomarov as a Historian of Little Russia, 1871), and Nachalo istoricheskoi deiatel'nosti Bogdana Khmel'nitskogo (The Beginning of the Historical Activity of Bohdan Khmelnytsky, 1873). He also edited Akty, otnosiashchiesia k istorii Iuzhnoi i Zapadnoi Rossii (vols 10, 14, 15) and the Izbornik of Sviatoslav (1073), published in 1880. Although written from a biased Russian imperialist perspective, his works contain a wealth of documentary material on the history of Ukraine. A bibliography of his works is found in Annals of the Ukrainian Academy of Arts and Sciences in the United States, 5–6 (1957).
