Khanenko, Oleksander

Khanenko, Oleksander [Ханенко, Олександер; Xanenko], b 1805/16, d 10 July 1895. Civic figure, historian, and collector of Ukrainian antiquities; descendant of the Khanenko Cossack starshyna family. In the 1840s he served as marshal of the nobility of Surazh county in Chernihiv gubernia. In 1858 he was appointed to the Chernihiv Gubernia Committee for the Improvement of the Peasants' Condition, and later he was active in implementing the reforms of 1861. In 1860 he became a member of the Land Survey Chamber in Chernihiv. He is the author of the valuable Istoricheskii ocherk mezhevykh uchrezhdenii v Malorossii (A Historical Outline of Land-Surveying Institutions in Little Russia, 1870) and of historical articles in Chernigovskie gubernskie vedomosti and elsewhere. His articles on the town of Pohar (1871), Saint Teodosii Uhlytsky, the history of several localities in Chernihiv gubernia (1887), and the documents of the Khanenko family (1887) also appeared as separate brochures. Khanenko amassed a large collection of 17th- and 18th-century books printed in Kyiv and Chernihiv.
