Lobysevych, Opanas

Lobysevych, Opanas [Лобисевич, Опанас; Lobysevyč], b 1732 in Pohar, Starodub regiment, d 1805. Writer; pioneer of the Ukrainian national renaissance. He studied at the Kyivan Mohyla Academy (1747–52) and then at the university at the Saint Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1754–60). Later, in Novhorod-Siverskyi, he became county (1783) and gubernial (1785–7) marshal of the nobility and one of the leading members of the Novhorod-Siverskyi patriotic circle (1780–90). Lobysevych is the author of Vergilievikh pastukhov ... v malorossiiskii kobeniak pereodetykh (1794), a Ukrainian adaptation of Virgil's Bucolics. The work was lost. His Russian translations from Latin and French were published in the journals Trudoliubivaia pchela (1759) and Baryshek vsiakiia vsiachini (1770).
