Marchenko, Mykhailo [Марченко, Михайло; Marčenko, Myxajlo], b 19 September 1902 in Hatne, Kyiv county, d 21 January 1983 in Kyiv. Historian; grandfather of Valerii Marchenko. A graduate of the Institute of Red Professors in Kyiv (1937), he chaired the Department of Feudalism at the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR and the USSR History Department at the Kyiv Pedagogical Institute (1937–9), was rector of Lviv University (1939–41), and lectured at the pedagogical institutes in Novosibirsk (1941–5) and Kyiv (1945–56). From 1956 he taught at Kyiv University. He wrote many articles and reviews, and monographs on the struggle between Russia and Poland for Ukraine in 1654–64 (1941), Ukrainian history as depicted in the works of Taras Shevchenko (1957), the historian Oleksander Lazarevsky (with L. Polukhin, 1958), Ukrainian historiography up to the mid-19th century (1959), and the history of Ukrainian culture up to the mid-18th century (1961).
