Odesa Scientific Society (Одеське наукове товариство при ВУАН; Odeske naukove tovarystvo pry VUAN). A scholarly association of the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences (VUAN), founded in 1926. Until the early 1930s, when it was suppressed, the society was the center of scholarly life in Odesa. In 1928 it had 140 members grouped into socioeconomic, historical-philological, natural science–mathematical, pedagogical, and medical sections, with Mykhailo Hordiievsky as president and V. Herasymenko as secretary. The society published its own serial called Zapysky (18 issues, 1927–30), Kostiantyn Koperzhynsky’s study of harvest rituals (1926), an edition of Marko Kropyvnytsky’s letters edited by Taras Slabchenko (1927), V. Kysilov’s Russian-Ukrainian medical dictionary (1928), a Ukrainian edition of J. Pestalozzi’s selected works (1928), and O. Sikyrynsky’s book on the correspondence of Hanna Barvinok (1928).
