Svit (Uzhhorod)

Svit (Uzhhorod) (World). The first Ukrainian newspaper published in Transcarpathia; the weekly organ of the Russophile Society of Saint Basil the Great, published in yazychiie in Uzhhorod in 1867–71. Edited by three teachers at the Uzhhorod gymnasium, Yu. Ihnatkov, Kyrylo Sabov, and V. Kymak, it contained articles on Transcarpathian folklore, ethnography, religious and church affairs, history, economic affairs, and farming, as well as literary works. Following a split in the society and its takeover by the Magyarone faction, the newspaper was replaced by Novyi svit (1871–2). Edited by Rev V. Gebei, it forsook yazychiie and promoted the use of the vernacular.
