Tiritaka [Тірітака; Tiritaka]. An ancient Greek city (see Ancient states on the northern Black Sea coast) of the Bosporan Kingdom, located immediately south of Panticapaeum (today on the outskirts of the city of Kerch). The town was founded in the 6th century BC at the site of a former settlement of the Cimmerians. It developed into a small trading center. In the 4th century AD it was destroyed by the invading Huns. Archeological excavations conducted intermittently in 1932–52 by V. Haidukevych have uncovered the remains of fortifications, homes, and a temple to Demeter, hoards of coins, and various tools and farm implements.
