Tysiatskyi

Tysiatskyi. During the Princely era a higher territorial official and the prince's viceregent, authorized to rule during his absence. He was appointed by the prince from among his distinguished boyars. The tysiatskyi also headed the military levy called the tysiacha and executed general administrative and policing functions. In the Novgorod republic (11th–13th centuries) the tysiatskyi was an elected official, chosen from the Boyar Council.
