Welcome to the Internet Encyclopedia of Ukraine,

hosted by the

Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies

The Internet Encyclopedia of Ukraine (IEU) is the most comprehensive source of authoritative information in English on Ukraine, its history, culture, geography, society, diaspora, and political administration. Building on the foundation laid by the five-volume Encyclopedia of Ukraine (1984–93; prepared by the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies [CIUS] and published by the University of Toronto Press), the IEU contains thousands of carefully researched articles by some of the leading specialists in Ukrainian studies and other relevant disciplines. The textual content is complemented with tens of thousands of photographs, illustrations, maps, and tables as well as music files which allow viewers to see faces of prominent people they are reading about; find locations of cities, towns, mountains, and rivers; look at architectural monuments and works of art; and listen to some musical compositions mentioned in the entries. At the same time, the IEU is a constant work in progress. The IEU team at CIUS, under the leadership of IEU Editor-in-Chief Marko Robert Stech, continuously works on updating and expanding the IEU database. New articles are written, edited, updated, and added daily. But our ability to provide this information and the speed with which we can make it available to Internet users worldwide greatly depends on the availability of financial resources. You can actively contribute to the success of the Internet Encyclopedia of Ukraine by supporting our work morally and financially. Become an IEU supporter! To learn more about our project, click on About IEU.

We invite you to explore the rich content of the IEU. First, you may wish to click on the buttons located on the left side of the screen, such as "History" or "Land," to view featured groups of entries, dedicated to particular topics. To search for particular names or articles, use the TITLE SEARCH box in the top right corner (type any part of a name or article you are searching for). You can navigate between entries through hyperlinks or by using <<< (Previous Article) or >>> (Next Article). We also encourage you to use the Advanced Search functions to find information on subjects that may not have their own entries but are discussed in various other articles.

Enjoy your journey to discover Ukraine and its heritage!
