Bakhmach

Bakhmach [Baxmač]. Map: II-13. City (2001 pop 20,332), a raion center in Chernihiv oblast, and an important railway junction on the KyivMoscow line. It began as a settlement in the 1860s and 1870s when the railway was under construction. In January 1919 it was the site of battles between the Bolsheviks and the Chornomorska Division under Otaman Polishchuk, which was attempting to keep Left-Bank Ukraine under the control of the armies of the Directory of the Ukrainian National Republic. Bakhmach has a factory that builds machines for the chemical industry and a food industry.
