Camelis, Joseph de

Camelis, Joseph de, b 7 December 1641 in Khios, Ottoman Empire, d 12 or 22 August 1706 in Prešov or Mukachevo, Transcarpathia. A Basilian monk of Greek origin, hailing from the island of Khios. Camelis was the procurator of the Basilian monastic order in Rome from 1674 to 1689 and in 1690 became bishop of the Mukachevo eparchy. He was involved in organizing elementary schools in Transcarpathia and published two books: Katekhyzys dlia nauky uhro-rus'kym liudem (A Catechism for the Education of Hungarian-Ruthenian People, 1698) and Bukvar iazyka slovenska (A Primer of the Slavonic Language, 1699).
