Ethnographic Commission of the Shevchenko Scientific Society

Ethnographic Commission of the Shevchenko Scientific Society (Etnohrafichna komisiia NTSh). The commission was founded in 1898 for the purpose of collecting and studying Ukrainian ethnographic materials. For many years its chairmen were Ivan Franko and Volodymyr Hnatiuk, who edited its publications from 1900. The commission published Etnohrafichnyi zbirnyk (The Ethnographic Collection, 40 vols, beginning in 1895) and Materiialy do ukraïns’koï etnolohiï (Materials on Ukrainian Ethnology, beginning in 1899), which in 1916 was renamed Materiialy do ukraïns’ko-rus’koï etnolohiï (Materials on Ukrainian-Ruthenian Ethnology) and in 1920 Materiialy do etnolohiï i antropolohiï (Materials on Ethnology and Anthropology, 22 vols altogether).
