Holowach, Ambrose

Holowach, Ambrose [Головач, Амврозій; Holovač, Amvrozij], b 22 July 1914 in Edmonton, d 27 February 1993 in Edmonton. Politician and businessman. He first tested the political waters with an unsuccessful 1949 federal election bid. He then won a seat in the House of Commons in 1953 and again in 1957 as the Social Credit member for Edmonton East. Holowach was defeated in the federal election of 1958 and turned to provincial politics: from 1959 to 1971 he represented Edmonton Centre in the Alberta legislature. In 1962 he was appointed provincial secretary, becoming the first cabinet minister of Ukrainian origin in Alberta.
