Kavetsky, Rostyslav

Kavetsky, Rostyslav [Кавецький, Ростислав; Kavec'kyj], b 1 December 1899 in Samara, Russia, d 12 October 1978 in Kyiv. Oncologist. A graduate of Samara University (1925); from 1951 full member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. He directed the AN URSR Institute of Clinical Physiology (1946–51) (see Institute of Physiology of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR) and served as head of its biological sciences division (1952–61, 1963–6). He was a founder and the first director of the Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Experimental and Clinical Oncology of the republic’s Ministry of Public Health (from 1970, the AN URSR Institute for Problems of Oncology). Kavetsky was a leading cancer specialist. His research dealt with the role of the nervous and endocrine systems in tumor growth.
