Kukolnyk, Vasyl

Kukolnyk, Vasyl [Кукольник, Василь; Kukol'nyk, Vasyl'], b 30 January 1765 in Mukachevo, Transcarpathia, d 18 February 1821 in Nizhyn, Chernihiv gubernia. Jurist, natural scientist, economist. After completing his studies in Hungary Kukolnyk taught physics, natural history, and agriculture at Zamostia Academy. In 1803–4 he edited Dziennik Ekonomiczny. He published several books on Russian civil law and Roman law. In 1816 he took up the Chair of Roman Law at the Saint Petersburg Pedagogical Institute. In 1820 he became director of the new Bezborodko Gymnasium in Nizhyn (see Nizhyn Lyceum). He ended his life by committing suicide.
